Prenatal Care Course
Prenatal Care CourseOftentimes, a crisis or unwanted pregnancy will trigger anxiety and stress in young women and girls, especially when the expectant mother decides to bring her child into the world. It is our desire to provide these women with the knowledge and tools to cope successfully in their pregnancy by offering them a comprehensive preparedness course.

The course features a biblical view of pregnancy and the importance of prenatal healthcare, fetal development, nutrition, and sexual integrity. Information on sexually transmitted diseases is also presented in the course.

The ultimate goal of the course is to have pregnant women and girls care for themselves and their unborn babies so that both mother and child have the best possible chance of being emotionally and physically healthy.

Prenatal Care is a four-week course offered three times a year on Tuesday evenings from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. for pregnant clients who desire to carry their children to term. Fathers and family members are encouraged to take the course as well.

Childbirth Preparation
Childbirth can be overwhelming, especially for first-time mothers. The objective of the class is to increase your knowledge of the childbirth process, relieve tension, and build your confidence in the delivery process.

The course presents a thorough look at the stages of labor and delivery, physical changes, emotional changes, comfort measures, pain management options, and breathing/relaxation techniques for the woman in labor. You are provided the necessary information and skills training that prepare you and/or your partners for the childbirth experience.

Childbirth Education is a four-week course offered three times a year on Tuesday evenings from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. for pregnant clients who desire to carry their children to term. The expectant mother is encouraged to bring a coach that will assist her in the birthing process.

Newborn Healthcare
Caring for a newborn can be a chaotic, stressful and tiring experience, especially for a new mother. The Newborn Healthcare course will prepare you to successfully meet the challenges of caring for your new baby.

The course reviews newborn health and postpartum care during the first year of the baby’s life with practical hands-on guidance for realistic expectations, umbilical cord care, circumcision care, bathing, feeding, safety (home and auto), and understanding infant needs in the first months of life. Through information dissemination and skills training, the goal of the class is to reduce the anxiety and stress of the mother in caring for her child.

Newborn Healthcare is a four-week course offered three times a year on Tuesday evenings from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. for pregnant clients who desire to carry their children to term. Fathers and family members are encouraged to attend the course as well.

Parenting Young Children
You have brought a healthy baby into the world. Now what do you do? Parenting Young Children will give you the knowledge and skills necessary to parent your children from birth to school age.

The course covers the following topics: Understanding Your Child, Understanding Behavior, Building Self Esteem, Communication, Learning to Cooperate, and Discipline. Parents learn to communicate and co-parent, giving their child the best possible life.

Parenting Young Children is a six-week course offered three times a year on Thursdays from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. for individuals and couples, males and females who want to better understand their role as parents. This course satisfies the requirement for those who have been court ordered to take a parenting class.

Special Topics in Parenting
Educational workshops are offered throughout the year on parenting issues related to infancy to adolescence. Topics include: Toilet Training, Safety, Childhood Nutrition, Single Parenting (everything from making a budget to seeking emotional support), 10 Things Every Child Needs (meeting your child’s basic needs enabling them to reach their fullest potential), and Discipline.

Healthy Relationships
Is it possible for a young single mother to experience joy and fulfillment in a healthy relationship…a relationship that does not include pre-marital sex? The answer is YES. The Healthy Relationships course is designed to help single mothers develop relationships that are healthy to both mother and child. The course helps young parents develop the necessary skills that will enable them to be positive role models for their children. Topics covered include Understanding Yourself, Goal setting, Decision Making, Avoiding Pregnancy, Avoiding STD’s, Sexual Integrity, Developing Relationships, Overcoming Pressure, and Developing Assertiveness.

The goal of the class is to decrease the number of teenage pregnancies, children born in single parent homes, and the number of sexually transmitted diseases affecting young people in our community. Building self-esteem, improving decision making and setting goals are components of the program.

Healthy Relationships is an eight-week course specifically designed for single mothers who have attended prenatal classes. However, we make the Healthy Relationships classes available to all students, even those who have not become sexually active.

Auto Safety Program
Learn the importance of auto safety for your infant and/or child. The Auto Safety Program is designed to help parents protect the lives of their children through car safety education and practical application.

This is an education and safety seat distribution program designed to reach limited-income families with children under six years of age in need of a car safety seat. The families must be able to use the seat; that is, they must own a car with workable seat belts and be willing to learn how to use it.

The class is one hour. Upon completion of the course, the Safe Riders Program provides parents with free car seats (one per family) as well as safety seat education.

Spiritual Growth Class
For those clients that are new in their faith and/or desire to have a more meaningful relationship with Christ, the Spiritual Growth class is designed to do just that. The objective of the course is to connect biblical principles to one’s emotions, reasoning, and beliefs as the Holy Spirit gives understanding and knowledge of the Word of God. The course is organized into two tracks:

Spiritual Growth I —Foundations: A 12-week course exploring the foundations of Christianity using Dr. Tony Evans’ book, Life Essentials.

Spiritual Growth II —Bible Study: A 12-week course featuring scripture reading and class discussion from selected passages and/or topics.

The client will be able to relate their spiritual condition to their current challenges in life with the goal of learning more effective ways of dealing with problems and developing a healthy lifestyle that is more Christ-centered. Spiritual growth classes are offered every Tuesday and Thursday evening from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.
